Things began happening around Lent of this year – approximately February. I turned 37 (thanks!). Pope Benedict XVI announced his abdication/retirement. Since the election (US) in November 2012, I weened myself off constant news. One evening, I treated myself to a little bit of news – just a few headlines. I have no recollection what I was reading at this point, but I do remember four letters I saw in the comments – SSPX.
I thoroughly ignored the internet adage for sane reading, that is, “never read the comments” because that’s where the crazy is. (Ahem, I’m sure this blog will be an exception). But there was something intriguing about those 4 letters – first, I had never seen them. I try stay well informed, in fact I’m somewhat of a general knowledge hound. If I see or hear something that I am ignorant of, I try to learn about it – you know, for next time. Second, the letters seemed to be calling to me. I can’t explain it. I have had many — what I would consider — personal encounters with God. I’m not talking about personal visits over coffee. I’m talking about the quiet voice (1 Kings 19:11) variety.
So I searched for ‘SSPX’, and I’m sure many of you can imagine what happened next. But for the benefit of Catholics who are now where I was then, or any other souls who happen here, I will elaborate. But please note, I am using a casual perspective as I write this – (see About). The SSPX is the Fraternal Society of Saint Pius X, a “traditional” Catholic society of priests. Beginning in that moment, I clicked on every link I could find, I looked up every word I didn’t know (and there were many!)…for 2 weeks I really did nothing with my free time but read, read, read.
And that was about a month ago. I can honestly say that this was a tangible turning point in my life. I felt then and feel strongly now, that God led me to a door, slightly ajar. It was up to me to open it, to investigate, to learn, to make choices. I’m not done yet.
My goal now is to try to help others lift the veil – to see what is out there if they didn’t know, to point out information that may have been hidden, or misconstrued to satisfy someone’s agenda. And then each person must consider for themselves what God is calling them to do with that information. I have to give credit to some sources in particular for the great wealth of information they have given me. This is not an exhaustive list, these are a few of the people or teams that have been especially helpful to calm, inform, entertain, and educate me in the past month of upheaval.
First and foremost, the SSPX USA website, where I believe I spidered the whole site and read every word.
Rorate Caeli, what has become my favorite traditional Catholic blog.
Father Z’s blog, and in particular, this article, which caused me to take action on what I’ve learned.
There are many more, which I will add to a section of resources and links soon.
All of this has a much longer backstory, all if which I hope to share soon. Be sure to read Acts 5:29
